MEET OUR TEAM
Dr. Berndtson is a graduate of Rush Medical College. He has practiced in Chicagoland for over 28 years and has clinical and administrative experience in both conventional and alternative medical settings. He has served as a clinical instructor for students at local medical and health professional schools.
He is certified by the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine and specializes in the evaluation and management of symptoms that persist despite usual medical care. He has undergone additional training to help patients address Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections. He is the author of a widely read peer-reviewed article, Review of evidence for immune evasion and persistent infection in Lyme disease. He is certified by Ritchie Shoemaker, MD to help genetically susceptible patients address the chronic inflammatory response syndrome caused by mold toxins found in water-damaged buildings.
Jesse Karpen, DC
Chiropractic Director and Office Manager
Dr. Karpen is a board-certified chiropractic physician and graduate of Cleveland Chiropractic College. His patient care philosophy emphasizes education and healthy lifestyle change. As a former athlete, he knows the importance of self-care routines that support physical stamina, strength, flexibility, and agility.
Christina Guthrie, L. Ac. Dipl. OM, MSTOM
Acupuncture and TCM Director
Christina is a licensed acupuncturist who graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine with a Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine (TCM). She is NCCAOM board certified in Chinese herbology and acupuncture. Christina completed a four-year academic program studying acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Eastern nutrition, and Western biomedicine. She has experience treating a variety of health ailments ranging from musculoskeletal disorders, pain management, gastrointestinal disorders, weight management, psychological disorders, and women’s health concerns. Using Chinese Medicine as a foundation for treatment, she stresses the importance of diet, exercise, and emotional well being to achieve health and balance.
Caren has specialized training in integrative nutrition/functional medicine from Northwestern Integrative Center, along with traditional training in Dietetics from Purdue University. Her educational background and expertise allows her to focus on functional lab testing and interpretation, going beyond the basics of nutrition and diet, in order to create personalized plans for her patients based on their individual biochemistry. She is also a Certified Medicinal Herbalist and holds a traditional Doctor of Naturopathy credentials, allowing her to make recommendations for herbal therapies and homeopathy, in additional to nutritional supplements.
During your time with Caren, she will work closely with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that blends the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to help you achieve your goals.
Taylor Wessel, MNT
Lifestyle Education Director
Taylor earned her Master Nutrition Therapist designation from the Nutrition Therapy Institute. She also graduated from the University of Colorado- Boulder with a B.A. in Integrative Physiology. Taylor is a certified FirstLine Therapist by Metagenics. She can help people with goals that may include improved health, weight loss, better sleep, more sustainable energy or something completely different. She loves helping people reach their goals and become the best versions of themselves with her motto, “You are worth it!”
